Vaccinations for Puppies and Kittens: What to Know

Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your family is an exciting time, and one of the most important things you can do to protect them is ensure they receive their vaccinations.

Young pets have developing immune systems, making them more vulnerable to serious infectious diseases. Vaccinations help build immunity against illnesses such as parvovirus, distemper, leptospirosis and infectious hepatitis in dogs, and cat flu, feline panleukopenia and leukaemia in cats.

Most puppies and kittens begin their vaccination course at around eight weeks of age, followed by a second vaccination a few weeks later. Your vet will advise when your pet can safely start exploring the outside world and meeting other animals.

Vaccinations don’t stop after the first year. Regular booster vaccinations help maintain protection throughout your pet’s life and are often combined with a thorough annual health check.
